It’s pretty common for US citizens to wonder how long they can stay in Ghana with their visas. However, this will be dependent on the type of visa they got, their purpose of visit (whether business, tourism, school or transit) and their travel plans. If you’re planning a trip to the country and want to know how long you can stay without disobeying the immigration rules, this article is for you.
Duration of stay for different visa types
As mentioned earlier, how long you can stay in the country depends on what visa you have. With that in mind, here are the various visas and their duration:
- Single-entry tourist visa: with this visa, you can stay in Ghana for up to 90 days, as it is valid for three months from the date of issue. However, it can be used only once.
- Multiple-entry visa: ideal for business travellers or anyone who wants to visit multiple times; each entry allows the holders to stay for 60 to 90 days, although dependent on the specific terms of the visa.
- Work or student visa: as the name implies, this visa will allow the holder to remain in the country for as long as the employment contract or academic program states, and it can be renewed frequently.
- Transit visa: for travellers passing through Ghana to another destination, this visa allows a stay of up to 48 hours and cannot be renewed.
What you should know about extending your stay
Fortunately, you can extend your stay in Ghana, which is great if you aren’t ready to leave yet. You only need to apply for an extension at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) before your current visa expires. With that being said, the visa extension application will require the following:
- Completed extension application form.
- A letter explaining the need for an extended stay.
- Original passport with the current visa.
- Proof of accommodation and financial means.
- Visa extension fees.
Note that the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) decides whether to approve your visa extension, and approval is not guaranteed. So make sure you apply for it before your visa expires; this way, you can avoid legal issues.
