Introduction
The Ghana Residence Permit grants to the foreigner authorization to reside in Ghana for a period, usually of more than 90days.
This Permit is issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) only. Also it is valid for 1year and it is renewed annually.
Why need a Residence Permit?
The Residence Permit is issued to foreigners who want to only reside in Ghana and for no other reason. Thus foreigners who want to:
- Live with their Ghanaian spouse,
- Live with their legally resident parent(s),
- Live with their legally resident spouse,
- Retire in Ghana,
Are eligible to apply for the Residence Permit.
Application Information
An application for a residence permit must be made in the prescribed form to the GIS. The applicant must be lawfully residing in Ghana at the date of the application.
The application must include a letter stating your personal details, reasons for the permit, and the period sought.
The main applicant is required to submit a medical report from the GIS Clinic. However dependents of the main applicant are exempted from this requirement.
The GIS treats the renewal of an expired permit as a new application. Thus all Government fees remains the same.
Documentary Requirements
- Filled Residence permit form.
- Signed application letter.
- 2 recent passport pictures.
- Valid original passport.
- Valid non-citizen ID card from the NIA.
- Medical reports.
- Birth or Marriage certificate (in the case of dependents)
- 2 Ghanaian guarantors (in the case of retirees)
- 6months bank statement from the host or main applicant.
- Police Clearance Certificate from country of residence (in the case of retiree or dependent)
- Copy of host’s Ghana Card or Residence permit (in the case of dependents)

- Permit fee for ECOWAS citizens are different.
- Renewal of Non-Citizen ID card is USD60.
