Introduction
The Ghana Residence Permit grants to the foreigner authorization to reside in Ghana for a period, usually of more than 90days.
This Permit is issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) only. Also it is valid for 1year and it is renewed annually.
Who need this Residence Permit?
The Right of Abode is a residency status granted to a:
- Ghanaian who has lost his/her Ghanaian citizenship in favor of another citizenship.
- Foreigner of African descent in the diaspora.
The Right of Abode is issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) when approved by the President of Ghana.
Benefits of the Right of Abode
Holders of this status will enjoy:
- Visa-free entry into Ghana.
- Unlimited stay in Ghana.
- Permit-free right to work in Ghana.
Application Information
An application for the Right of Abode must be made in the prescribed form to the GIS. The applicant must be lawfully residing in Ghana at the date of the application.
In the case of the Foreigner he/she must:
- Have resided in Ghana for at least 7years.
- Show proof of African roots.
- Produce a valid citizenship renunciation certificate.
- Does not give the holder citizenship status.
- Can be revoked for reasons such as conviction of crime.
Documentary Requirements
- Filled Right of Abode form.
- Applicant’s autobiography.
- Signed application letter.
- 4 recent passport pictures.
- Copy of valid passport.
- Medical reports.
- Valid non-citizen ID card from the NIA.
- Police Clearance Certificate from country of origin.
- 2 Ghanaian character references (Lawyers etc.)
- Copy of renunciation certificate (in the case of ex-Ghanaian).
- Proof of African descent (in the case of Foreigner).

- Right of Abode fee is paid when the approval is given.
- Right of Abode fee is GHS3000 for Foreigner.
