Introduction
The Ghana Residence Permit grants to the foreigner authorization to reside in Ghana for a period, usually of more than 90days.
This Permit is issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) only. Also it is valid for 1year and it is renewed annually.
Why need a Residence Permit?
The Work Permit is issued to foreigners who want to operate a registered business or have being employed in Ghana. Thus the following foreigners qualify for this permit:
- Employees of commercial businesses,
- Shareholders of the company,
- Employees of churches & other non-profit organizations
Application Information
An application for a Work permit must be made in the prescribed form to the GIS. The applicant must be lawfully residing in Ghana at the date of the application.
The application must include a letter stating your personal details, reasons for the permit, and the period sought.
The applicant is required to submit a medical report from the GIS Clinic.
The GIS treats the renewal of an expired permit as a new application. Thus all Government fees remains the same.
Dependents of the permit holder are eligible to apply for a Residence permit.
Documentary Requirements
- Filled Residence & Work permit forms.
- Signed application letter from the organization.
- Copy of the organization’s registration documents.
- Tax Clearance certificate (in the case of existing company).
- 2 recent passport pictures.
- Valid original passport.
- Valid non-citizen ID card from the NIA.
- GIS Clinic Medical reports
- Valid Police report.
- Copy of applicant’s CV.
- Copy of applicant’s academic certificates.

Kindly Note**
- Work Permit fee for ECOWAS citizens are different.
- Renewal of Non-Citizen ID card is USD60.
- Service fee will be discounted for permit renewals.
